EVIL EYE

The Evil Eye Bead or Nazar Boncuk Charm, goes back thousands of years, the earliest written references in the 3rd  millennium BC.  The effects of the "evil eye" are believed real and genuinely feared.  The Evil Eye is in Greece, Mexico, Israel, the Middle East, different people, different religions, but all believe in the the Evil Eye and they all wear this good luck charm to guard against it.

In the Mediterranean and Middle East, it is believed envious gazes or high praise from others can bring you bad luck.  The Nazar Boncuk Charm or Evil Eye Bead is an "eye", most often set in a blue background.  The original beads were made of molten glass, iron, copper, water and salt. This combination is believed to provide a shield from the forces of evil.  The "eye" stares back at the world to stave off evil spirits and keep one safe from harm.  You will find them everywhere, houses, cars, key chains, jewelry, embedded in or painted on buildings or cement paths, as a decoration, or attached to anything that will attract envy or greed.  Apparently they are always pinned to the shirt of newborn babies.
The Evil Eye Bead is readily available for purchase in a multitude of presentations, from plastic to extremely ornate, and they are often given as gifts to visitors to homes.

We are getting a collection of these little beads, having been attached by a safety pin to some purchase we have made.
