Turkey, A New Adventure

WELCOME TO THOMAS'S TALK TURKEY.

Join us on our newest adventure....living and working in Bursa,Turkey. Geoff is the Director of Research and Development for May Agro Seed Co., both field seed and vegetable seed. We will be experiencing a multitude of changes and new situations involving culture, language, food, environment and scenery. Geoff has been here off and on since January and permanently since April, and Sherry arrived on June 11th. He was able to master driving, learn his way around, and learn a few words/phrases in Turkish and scope out all the different grocery stores, as well as the fruit and vegetable market. He has been a great tour guide since Sherry arrived. We have managed to pack quite a few things into this first week here, on the weekends and after work.

Bursa is located in the northwest of Turkey, on the Asian side, below Istabul, and is known as the "green town" because of all the lush greenery in and around the town as well as all the agrigulture and sits up the side of the lower Uludag Mountains. The temperatures range in the mid 80's to high 90's F right now, and there is often a heat/humidity haze haging over the mountains and valley, as you will see in many photos. As well as agriculture, Bursa is an industrial city, with a large Renault and Fiat factory and many textile factories, to just mention a few. We are only 12 miles from the ski fields of Uludag (Mt. Olympus) although it takes 1 hour to drive there, and 6 miles from the Marmara sea, 3 hours to the Aegean Sea (think Greek Islands), and 5 hours to the Mediterranean. We are close to Epheses, Gallipoli, Troy and about 100 miles from Istanbul, although to drive to Istanbul takes 4 hours due to traffic, thus you always use the ferry to cross, which is about 45 miles across and takes 1-1/2 hours. Turkey is famous as the home of St. Paul of Tarsis and Santa Clause (St. Christopher).

We thought we would be moving into our own home this weekend, but...here we sit, waiting for our ship to come in. Hopefully, this week????????

We will endeavor to keep you informed of our adventures with words and photos.

Enjoy!!
Geoff & Sherry
