Here's Your Sign and Other Observations 2

This was our bounty one Saturday from the local markets. They are here every Saturday and sell only locally produced fruits, vegetables, plants, cheeses, dried fruits and nuts, and fish. There is also a Gypsy Market section for clothes and miscellaneous other goods. The produce is amazing and the cost is good. Much less than the supermarket and much fresher.

This is not a very good photo, but we were trying to show the lines of ATM machines that appear on
streets. Sometimes in the shopping centers, there may be 10 in a row, all with lines.

While Turkey is very advanced and modern in some ways, in agriculture they still do a lot by hand.
Geoff called this photo "the 27 row planter", 27 women planting sunflowers by hand on 10 acres.
I imagine their backs hurt at the end of the day. Women are used for the bulk of agricultural labor.

*Observation: The language is "foreign" to look at, hear, and try to speak. When we go to think to speak a foreign word, it comes out Spanish. Amazing how much Spanish is still tucked away in our brains

*Beef is very expensive, about 25TL (Turkish lira)/kilo or approximately $8-10/lb. The small farm is still very much alive here, and there are not the huge feed lots or large ranches to produce beef. A dairy farmer would have maybe 10 cows max. They can make more money with dairy cattle, sheep or goats. Chicken is comparable to the US. Fish is high right now as they over fished the seas, but have set guidelines now and there are fish farms, but both will take time to recoup. Of course, there is no pork
